In recent years, the Sultanate of Oman has made significant strides in the renewable energy sector, particularly in solar power, leveraging its geographic advantage with abundant sunlight throughout the year. A central part of this development involves the signing of solar energy agreements and partnerships between the Omani government and both local and international private sectors.

Types of Solar Energy Agreements in Oman

  1. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs): These are long-term contracts between solar project developers and government entities like the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), where electricity generated from solar plants is sold at a fixed rate for a period typically ranging from 15 to 25 years.
  2. EPC + O&M Contracts (Engineering, Procurement, Construction + Operation & Maintenance): These contracts involve hiring specialized firms to design, build, and operate solar power plants, with potential transfer of ownership after a set operational period.
  3. Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): These agreements encourage collaboration between the government and private investors, sharing both risks and profits, and attracting foreign direct investment into Oman’s green energy sector.

Key Solar Projects in Oman

  • Ibri Solar Power Plant: One of the largest solar projects in Oman, with a production capacity of over 500 MW, developed through a consortium of international and local companies.
  • Dhofar Solar Project: Designed to supply electricity to over 30,000 homes, this project is a model example of a long-term PPA with renewable energy goals.
  • Rooftop Solar Initiatives: Numerous agreements have been signed to install solar panels on schools, hospitals, and government buildings as part of Oman’s broader sustainability and decentralization initiatives.

Objectives of These Agreements and Projects

  • Enhancing energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Achieving Oman Vision 2040 goals related to environmental sustainability and clean energy.
  • Attracting foreign investment and promoting green technology transfer.
  • Creating job opportunities in solar engineering, installation, and maintenance.

As part of its internationalization strategy, Aya Technology announced that it was signing a a preliminary agreement with the Central African country , a key player in the development of a green economy in Africa This partnership focuses on technologies for renewable energy production, such as solar power, solar power applications and the integration of renewable energies into the grid. Through this agreement, Aya Technology intends to strengthen its presence in the Mediterranean Basin, to confirm the international potential of its ecosystem, and to provide its members with new technical and business opportunities.
